Can't create an ISA campaign[edit]
I try to https://tools.wmflabs.org/isa/campaigns/create an ISA campaign. I am properly logged into my account.
I am trying to register Campaign:wlh-be into the ISA tool in order to facilitate adding structured metadata.
I am unable to create a campaign. I cannot select the Category:Images from Wiki Loves Heritage Belgium in 2019 and I get a fatal error after completing the form.
Oops! Something Went Wrong! Isa might be undergoing maintenance

- Dear Geert Van Pamel, Thank you for considering ISA for your campaigns. The server could have been under maintenance when you tried creating the campaign. Can you try to recreate this campaign again? Or drop a request for the campaign to be created for you if need be. Eugene233 (talk) 15:41, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, the problem was indeed the temporary unavailability (yesterday) of Commons Categories... I could not enter/validate my campaign category.
- This evening I managed to create the campaign: https://tools.wmflabs.org/isa/campaigns/18
- But when I click on "Get Started" I get the message "No images found for this campaign!"
- Still, I see that up to now 299 photos have been uploaded and should be available... what else could be wrong?
- I've already increased the Category depth from 0 to 1 but this doesn't make any difference...
- I think the application should also indicate that the start and end date should be entered as ISO date YYYY-MM-DD.
- Geert Van Pamel (talk) 16:35, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- I have found the reason why the application did not show any image... The (classic) "Wiki Loves" campaigns are running worldwide, and require a country code as subsequent selection criterium, which our national campaign does not have. So I have unchecked the Wiki Loves checkbox... problem solved. Geert Van Pamel (talk) 20:23, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

ISA during the m:WikiConvention francophone/2019[edit]
The ISA tool was presented during the convention here and a mini challenge was organized during the convention on the category Category:Brussels (municipality) (3 levels down).
Link to the campaign : https://tools.wmflabs.org/isa/campaigns/22
Figures
- Total images in the campaign : 11266
- Total number of participants : 17
- Total number of edits : 2108
- Top participant : 500 improvement
Desc
- The campaign was created a day before the convention. It was initially with 5 levels, but I had problems loading it all with the total number of images. So I restricted it to 3 level down
- The campaign was advertised only during the presentation at the convention, and on twitter.
- I printed 10 leaflets. 9 were distributed during the presentation and one was pinned near coffee table and used for final picture with winners [1]
- With regards to twitter, I sent a few tweets just before the convention to set up the context and invite participation [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. Then I scheduled a few more tweets [9], [10], [11] to take place during the convention.
- I announced the winners on twitter as well, with the results [12], [13].
- I proposed prizes for the top 3 contributors (could not find the 3rd person...). Those were multicolored candy bars from my local area (gluten free !).
Lessons/Outcome
Lot's of interest and feedback.
- There was clearly a feeling of competition that emerged
- However, those who did not read on twitter or were not at the presentation were unaware of the competition. Probably would have been better to try to mention it during the opening of the convention when every one was there
- A former tester expressed his appreciation about the improvements since the Wikimania version
- Many comments regarding translation of the interface (far from perfect yet). Noting that in some areas, text too long was breaking up page --> to check and be aware of
- Several asked that it be made in an independent app that can be installed on phone.
- One also noted that the system sould be able to pre-load a bunch of images so that people could do the tagging offline, then data added would be saved when online again (context of use: subway with connectivity going on and off)
- There were discussions regarding the licence of the data added to the tool (some participants did not know structured data on Commons was added under CC0). It was pointed out that this was mentioned in the help page [14]
- Several people asked questions with regards to the rules of image appearance (or lack there of). Some people thought that once edited once the image would not be delivered any more to other participants. Many wondered what were the rationale for img delivery --> needs fine-tuning and perhaps clarification in help page on the wiki at least
- Most savy testers indicated interest to see the other structured data (statements) added as well to the app
- Several requests to have a direct url link on participants username (leading to Commons)
- Validation Buttons on the participate screen should be reworked. Unclear several elements can be saved on the page (perhaps a save all ?) and scroll up and down was a bit weird with the "next image" button
- I notice several strategies for participation. The most active ones were doing some copy paste of legend and then quickly going through several images save of the same legend (and thus going very quickly) whilst others took care of entering all data (and were slow). Some reported the system could pre-proposed the data based on previous image data.
- More motivation (and understanding) for depicts than for caption
- Some people wondered in how much depth they should go when adding depict (eg, Tree versus Chamaedorea deckeriana) ---> up to Commons to establish the recommandations on this but maybe a note should be added on the help page
- Another question raised... do the mass upload tools currently allow integration of SD during mass uploads
- I will contact all participants to invite them to share further thoughts
- Overall, I really enjoyed organizing that little challenge. Was really fun. I also think it was fruitful !
"No images found for this campaign"[edit]
I'm trying to get a campaign going and I think my settings are right, but I get this error whenever I click on "Get Started":
I'd love some guidance on how to get this working. Thank you for building this tool! —Todrobbins (talk) 19:24, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for using the ISA tool and for reporting this error Todrobbins, currently we are accepting files in the .jpg, .png and .svg formats and not .tiff which most (if not all) of the images in the chosen category Media files produced by UNESCO: 2019-09 are composed of. You can visit this [task https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T232038] to see more about this issue. Eugene233 (talk) 13:58, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks Eugene! I've subscribed to that issue. I really appreciate the work all of you are doing on this tool! --Todrobbins (talk) 19:52, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
Bad statements through campaign36[edit]
At the campaign36 there are added many bad statements I had to correct nearly every image on my watch list. There are redundant statements, statements that does not make sense because the item can not be depicted or there is a more exact item available but not used. --GPSLeo (talk) 06:53, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Translate[edit]
How can I help translate the tool to Swedish? Ainali (talk) 07:38, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
- I was gonna ask the same thing. It's really weird having bullet point saying "Translating on translatewiki (still needs to get done, you wanna help ?)" without any link. Also, there's no ISA on translatewiki so what do you do? Where is this posible? --Sabelöga (talk) 11:26, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

Effet loupe sur les images[edit]
Bonjour, comment peut-on désactiver cette nouvelle fonction ? J'adore cet outil, mais ça, c'est très irritant. :/ --Wikinade (talk) 14:54, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
unable to edit and/or delete campaign, username campaign manager incorrect[edit]
hi, I started a campaign (164) but I can't edit the campaign. The main issue is that my username (automatically filled by the tool) is stated incorrect as campaign manager: AHendriksen-col instead of AHendriksen-collecties. Then I tried tot edit it, and eventually made a second campaign instead, and wanted to delete 164, but again my username is stated incorrect. Now I'd like tot delete campaign 164 and edit campaign 165 to correct my username as Campaign Manager, but I can't edit my campaigns, receiving the message 'Oops something went wrong'... is this because ISA is under maintenance or because of the incorrect stored username? Furthermore my test-edit states my username wrong as well, this time 'AHendriksen-collecti' ....as if there isn't enough space for the characters. How to solve this? Thanks for your help, kind regards AHendriksen-collecties (talk) 14:11, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @AHendriksen-collecties: thanks for flagging this issue (I just saw your email about it). I saw that you also filed a bug report on Phabricator (that's fantastic, thank you!) and have alerted ISA's developer. Cheers, Spinster (talk) 15:38, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Qualifier[edit]
The tool does not work with qualifiers and it looks like that already existing qualifiers were removed if for example "preferred" is set. --XRay 💬 11:25, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
- The campaign 191 Commons:ISA Tool/Challenges causes errors. There are users switching states from "normal" to "preferred" (without any sense) and all already set qualifiers were removed. The campaign isn't useful, informations are lost. --XRay 💬 17:34, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
- This is really annoying, because existing qualifiers tend to be more useful than a "prominent". This makes good faith editors [vandalize well-documented files]. Please fix that NOW or stop the campaigns. --El Grafo (talk) 07:23, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
Disqualifying?[edit]
Can users actually be disqualified as well? In the current campaign 191 is someone - based on the changes I see - who only sets status from "normal" to "preferred" and incidentally deletes the qualifiers. Is it about quantity or quality? XRay 💬 10:44, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Anthere and Islahaddow: What do you think about disqualifying challenge participants setting only status randomly from "normal" to "preferred" and removing qualifiers as the only contribution to the challenge? --XRay 💬 04:28, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hello User:XRay. Sorry for the slow answer... I was on holidays :)
- Yeah, that’s definitely wrong to do that. Last year, we had one editor who tried to cheat with the system, adding then removing then adding back random qualifiers. I disqualified him. I was particularly mad because he was putting random qualifiers... so this was vandalism...
- But if somebody is playing the system, even if not damaging the content, this is not fair to the others. I seem to have identified the person. I am investigating the situation. user:Anthere — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2A01:CB1C:D6A:9F00:1D90:EBF7:EB94:2E84 (talk) 18:25, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Just so that I am sure, the two typical situations I see are
- sometimes, a person edit separately the claim and the rank, and this generates two « edits » (such as [15] or [16])
- sometimes, a person edit together the claim and the rank, and this generates one « edit » (such as [17]
Indeed, the first case counts 2 edits instead of 1, but the tool allows this and it is not officially said « wrong » (and everyone can do the same). I understand it doubles the edits compared to other practices, but it does not damage the content itself, so it is hard to really complain.
This being said... I agree with you this editor is, to my taste, spending a little bit too much time just clicking on the rank to change it instead of improving the claims themselves...
However, I found a few (really not many) odd cases such as [18] or [19] or [20]... but I am now thinking that it may not be an intended damage from his part... but more an ISA tool limitation issue. Each time it seems to happen when there are specific property information (such as color) which is not displayed in the ISA tool because it did not existed when the tool was set up... and that this info (color) is accidentally removed when the editor changes the rank... Do you see what I mean ? I am not 100% sure, but I suspect this is what is happening. If this is so, he can not be blamed for removing info accidentally (not displayed in ISA). But there is a tech fix to do in ISA to avoid that from happening. We had not met the issue yet because probably working on sets of images yet very poorly described or not described at all. So you think my assessment is correct ? Anthere (talk) 19:07, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
- To go a step further... with regards to the color qualifier... I see a message on Safari (but not on Chrome) which states allowed-entity-types constraintHelp Discuss. The property color should not be used on this type of entity, the only valid entity type is Wikibase item.. Any suggestion of implications ? Why is the color property used then ? Phabricator entry : https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T316018
- Thank for your investigation. I gave the user a hint on his discussion page and asked him to stop changing the priority only, but he didn't answered. And I've opened an issue at Phabricator too. I'm not amused about the campaign. Most of the edits are useless, only a very few edits are useful. --XRay 💬 19:14, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- I generally agree with you. I came with that idea of working on featured images and I now realize it was not a bright idea, in particular due to this bug. Lesson learned... Anthere (talk) Anthere (talk) 16:01, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

ISA Tool Workshop - Save the date: Dec 12th[edit]
Greetings.
We released a few weeks ago a new version of the ISA tool on the Test Server. The new version propose semi-automatic tagging of images, which seeks to assist community in identifying and labelling depicts statements for Commons files.
Now we are looking for feedback with regards to
- the look, feel, and usability of the tool with the machine vision / metadata-to-concept enhancements in place.
- and most importantly, the quality of the recommandations provided.
This is why we are organizing an online workshop on Monday 12th of December, 16h-17h30 UTC+1 (on zoom). We will be very happy if you find the time to join us.
More information and sign-up : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:ISA_Tool/Image_to_Concept#ISA_Workshop_-_Dec_12th
Thank you in advanceǃ

Issues with rank flipping to gain contest edits[edit]
I posted on Commons talk:ISA Tool/Challenges yesterday, and someone pointed me to a discussion at Commons talk:Structured data#Can anyone explain what is going on here?, with the same problems about rank flipping that I see above (in the "Qualifier" and "Disqualifying?" sections. Can something be done about this problem? It has occurred a lot on the latest challenge (#239) and seems to be a recurring problem. Clay (talk) 15:03, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
- And speaking as someone where some of my uploads have been subject to this, it is really annoying to constantly get notifications in my watchlist that amount to "yes, it's prominent", "no, it's not". - Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
- If we do not get the tool fixed we could switch on a warning or even a block on all rank changes using the abuse filter I created. Special:AbuseFilter/277 GPSLeo (talk) 17:20, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Wrong error message: Error creating campaign[edit]
I created by accident duplicate campaigns because I received each time the same error message "Error creating campaign" while involuntary creating duplicate campaigns https://isa.toolforge.org/campaigns/252 till https://isa.toolforge.org/campaigns/272 (could those duplicates be deleted, please?). I only discovered the duplicate campaigns after searching for my campaign. I can't update campaign https://isa.toolforge.org/campaigns/251, although it contains a valid category https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiki_Loves_Living_Heritage_in_Belgium. I get the error message "Campaign update failed please try later!". Please advise me, or fix the problem. Geert Van Pamel (talk) 07:43, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Geert Van Pamel. There is currently a bug with creating campaigns. It is being tracked at T340485. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 12:14, 27 June 2023 (UTC)
- Why does it take so long to fix the problem? Wikimedia Belgium is currently running 4 photo campaigns, and we are unable to use the ISA Tool. There are other worldwide campaigns running like Wiki Loves Monuments, and Wiki Loves Living Heritage... Geert Van Pamel (talk) 12:46, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- The issue which was flagged before has been resolved, apologies for not getting back on that. There is an remaining issue where on the campaign page the ISA tool sometimes incorrectly believe you are logged when you are not. To resolve this explicitly log out then log back in from the start page. Please see T344107 for further information.
- As to why fixing these problems take so long to fix. The ISA tool has very limited resources for technical development. Most of the work is done by volunteers with Wikimedia Sverige supporting in a limited capacity. A lot of the recent issues have also taken place at the interface between the ISA tool and the Toolforge infrastructure, making it harder to pin down the issue. / André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 07:42, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
