[edit]
I've created the following navbox containing the information from this page:
I propose moving this from my userspace into the Template namespace and transcluding it at the bottom of each of the listed pages. Any thoughts, objections or suggestions? —DoktorMandrake 15:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- Comment I found it handy and useful. Personally, I'd extend its scope also to general advice, like Commons:Categories and Help:Gadget-ImageAnnotator. -- IANEZZ (talk) 19:59, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
- Support great navbox. I also agree with Ianezz. Please add Categories and Annotator. I also suggest transcluding this template on Commons:Village_pump#Protecting_files_only_from_uploading.2C_not_from_editing_the_description_page so users would be tempted to read the page...--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 20:45, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
- Is this what you had in mind, Ianezz?
- The new section would need fleshing out a bit more, and personally I find the additions a little out of place, but I welcome further comments. DoktorMandrake 14:22, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- That's exactly it. To be clear, I'll support also the other version without the "Help & Advice" section, should it turn out that the scope is too broad, but I believe that including some help files in that template (and adding the template to them) serves a double purpose:
- Keep at hand some help and advice pages that, in time, could turn into official policies and guidelines (categories, and now annotations as well, are an everyday aspect of Commons);
- Advertise offcial policies and guidelines to users who otherwise would be exposed mainly to help files. The trick would be using the template also in help files.

- You don't need consensus to place the template on all the policies pages. It's a significant improvement and could just be placed on all relevant pages. I don't see why the General policy is useful in this template since it is listed at the bottom of every page... Remove also Welcome and About commons since both are also on the bottom of every page... The Media types and sources aren't related to the policy and guidelines.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 22:40, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
The GFDL link doesn't need to be there. And don't forget we're now CC-BY-SA too. Rocket000 (talk) 19:04, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for all the comments - the template has been amended with the above in mind. Now that the template is live, can I suggest any further comments/suggestions be made at Template talk:Commons policies and guidelines? DoktorMandrake 01:19, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Commons:Categories versus Commons:Galleries[edit]
Why is Commons:Galleries listed under Category:Commons guidelines, while Commons:Categories is listed under Category:Commons help? Evrik (talk) 20:58, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- Commons:Categories is not (yet?) an official guideline, while Commons:Galleries is (don't know the exact way it reached this status). Fact is, it is a lot easier to reach a large consensus on the matter of galleries than on categories, and I believe the source of everything "official" should always be discussion and voting (i.e. large consensus). -- IANEZZ (talk) 21:56, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- The category page could be split into a help page (technical/wiki stuff, tips, etc.) and a policy page (over-categorization, naming conventions, etc.). I was looking for it too. Rocket000 (talk) 18:58, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Patrolling[edit]
It seems that Commons:Patrol is an official guideline. I believe it should be added under "Behaviour". -- IANEZZ (talk) 12:29, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
- 80 months later, somebody fixed this on {{Commons_policies_and_guidelines}}. Be..anyone (talk) 18:29, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
